Netherlands road works and closures trigger widespread traffic disruptions in July

From early July, several major road projects across the Netherlands have forced detours and caused significant congestion. On the A1, bus lines 320 and 221 run alternative routes between 3 July and 27 July, with line 320 skipping the Gooimeer P+R stop and line 221 bypassing the halt altogether; passengers are advised to use nearby stops such as Keverdijk.

The Europatunnel in Zoetermeer is closed for six weeks for extensive maintenance, halting traffic that normally uses the tunnel.

Between Arnhem and Apeldoorn, the A50 is fully closed on weekends for urgent ecoduct repairs, diverting traffic via the A1, A30 and A12 and adding up to forty‑five minutes to journeys.

In Zwolle, simultaneous closures of the IJsselallee and the N35 at the Ganzepanbrug created a “traffic infarct” during the Monday evening rush, with long queues forming on the Oldeneelallee and other arterial streets.

A separate incident on 5 July saw a multi‑vehicle collision on the A12 near Babberich, prompting a temporary full closure of the highway until the wreckage was cleared later that day.
