Netherlands infrastructure lacks readiness for large-scale military transport
A report from the Netherlands Court of Audit (Algemene Rekenkamer) reveals that the country's road and rail networks are currently unprepared for the large-scale transport of military equipment in the event of a war in Europe.
The infrastructure fails to meet NATO standards regarding road height, load capacity, and width, which creates significant obstacles for heavy military vehicles. While military convoys can currently bypass these issues by taking detours, the Court warns that large-scale mobilization during wartime could paralyze civilian traffic.
An estimated €9.5 billion is required to upgrade the infrastructure, with at least €5 billion specifically needed to meet military requirements. These funds would address issues such as reinforcing bridges and raising viaducts. Given its strategic location on the North Sea, the Netherlands plays a vital role in NATO by facilitating the movement of both its own forces and those of its allies.
