Netherlands begins transition from Windows to Linux for government systems

The Netherlands has launched a strategic initiative to transition its government computing systems from Microsoft Windows to Linux. Known as Digitaal Autonome Werkomgeving Overheid (DAWO), the project aims to enhance digital sovereignty and reduce reliance on technology controlled by non-EU companies.

At the core of this transition is NixOS, a Linux distribution chosen for its highly secure and reproducible configuration management. The project is not limited to operating systems; it seeks to replace the entire proprietary ecosystem, including productivity software, cloud storage, collaboration tools, and IT management services.

The move was accelerated by geopolitical concerns following U.S. sanctions against the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague. During that period, Microsoft reportedly cut access to essential services, such as email, for the ICC's chief prosecutor, highlighting the vulnerability of state infrastructures to unilateral decisions by foreign private providers.

Currently in a pilot phase involving various municipalities, the project is testing the environment's performance for everyday government tasks. Developers aim to launch a stable version of this autonomous digital workspace by 2027.
