Netherlands initiatives promote suicide prevention and mental health awareness

During World Suicide Prevention Week, various initiatives in the Netherlands aim to break the taboo surrounding mental health and suicide. In Hillegom, the municipality has installed signs on public benches with the message, ‘A good conversation begins with truly seeing someone.’ These signs include a QR code directing individuals to suicide prevention resources. This initiative aligns with a legal mandate for municipalities to address suicide prevention starting in 2026.

In Groningen, dozens of participants took part in the ‘Walk into the Light’ event. The symbolic walk began in darkness and concluded at sunrise, representing a transition from darkness to light. Participants included mental health professionals, survivors, and bereaved family members. Organizations such as Lentis emphasized the importance of opening up conversations about mental health to provide support and connection for those struggling.
