Suicide prevention initiatives in the Netherlands
Overview
Various organizations and municipalities across the Netherlands are launching initiatives to promote suicide prevention and mental health awareness, particularly during World Suicide Prevention Week (September 7 to 13).
In the IJsselland region, partners including several GGD branches and municipalities such as Deventer, Olst-Wijhe, Raalte, and Voorst are collaborating on activities. These include ‘Walk into the Light’ events—symbolic early-morning walks toward the sunrise—scheduled in locations including Dalfsen, Steenwijk, Zwolle, and Hardenberg. Other efforts involve theater performances, peer support groups, and gatekeeper training provided by 113 Zelfmoordpreventie to help community members recognize warning signs.
As the awareness week progresses, more than 500 organizations, including hospitals and mental health institutions, are participating. A central symbol is the suicide prevention ribbon, with over 85,000 ribbons requested to represent hope and connection. Specific activities include a sunrise walk in Velsen and targeted campaigns by 113 Zelfmoordpreventie, such as the ‘Self-solving begins with 113’ initiative for men aged 40 to 70.
In Dokkum, dozens of participants joined a 3.5-kilometer ‘Walk into the Light’ event, bringing together bereaved family members, professionals, and those with lived experience. Advocates and experts, including musicians Bruno Rummler and Sjoerd-Klaas Steegstra, are emphasizing open conversation to combat loneliness and depression.
Recent activities include a ‘Walk into the Light’ event in Groningen, where participants transitioned from darkness to sunrise to symbolize hope. In Hillegom, the municipality has installed signs on public benches featuring the message, ‘A good conversation begins with truly seeing someone,’ accompanied by QR codes for suicide prevention resources. This local effort aligns with a 2026 legal mandate requiring municipalities to address suicide prevention.
These efforts aim to address the national reality where more than 1,750 people die by suicide annually, averaging nearly five deaths per day.
