Netherlands Justice Minister proposes law against terrorism glorification
Dutch Minister of Justice David van Weel is preparing a legislative proposal to criminalize the glorification of terrorism and the public expression of support for terrorist organizations. The proposed changes to the Dutch Penal Code (Sr) and the Penal Code for Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba (Sr BES) would make it an offense to glorify a terrorist crime through speech, writing, or imagery, provided the crime carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
Violations of the proposed article 132a Sr could result in a prison sentence of up to three years or a specific category of fine. The initiative follows previous discussions by former CDA leader Sybrand van Haersma Buma regarding the need to prohibit the glorification of terrorism.
Critics and journalists have expressed concerns that the scope of the proposal, which includes expressions on social media, could impact freedom of speech and lead to legal scrutiny for journalists reporting on relevant events.
