Netherlands King states nitrogen plan delays would be irresponsible

During the Throne Speech, King Willem-Alexander stated that postponing or canceling nitrogen reduction plans would be irresponsible. The speech emphasized the need to break the current impasse to allow for the resumption of permit issuance for housing, businesses, and infrastructure, as well as for nature restoration and water quality improvement.

The government intends to move forward with the nitrogen package presented in June, with Agriculture Minister Jaimi van Essen expected to present concrete proposals this autumn. While the King acknowledged that the direct pain and uncertainty are most acutely felt by farming families near vulnerable nature areas, he noted that the cabinet will allocate significant funds to support them.

The administration aims to balance interests by continuing dialogue with farmers and provinces to provide clarity and future perspectives for the agricultural sector, ensuring that the industry can move forward alongside environmental goals.
