Netherlands launches autumn coronavirus vaccination campaign

The autumn coronavirus vaccination campaign has commenced in the Netherlands. For the 2026 season, the age threshold for automatic invitations from the RIVM has been increased from 60 to 70 years old.

Individuals aged 50 to 69 may still be eligible for the vaccine if they have specific underlying medical conditions that increase their risk of severe illness. Unlike those aged 70 and older, this middle-age group will not receive an automatic invitation and must check their eligibility and schedule appointments through the GGD.

Data from the RIVM indicates a continuing downward trend in the number of registered vaccinations. While millions were administered in 2021, the number has declined annually, reaching approximately 2.2 million last year. Health officials note that this decline is partly due to a narrowing target group, as certain demographics, such as pregnant women, are no longer automatically included in the primary invitation group.
