Netherlands launches campaign to combat rising cybercrime and phishing

The Dutch ministries of Justice and Security and the Interior have launched a new public awareness campaign titled ‘Laat je niet interneppen’ (Don’t be fooled) to combat rising online deception and fraud.

Research indicates that 94 percent of Dutch adults experience doubt regarding the reliability of links, advertisements, or messages, yet many proceed to click regardless. Approximately two out of three Dutch citizens face cybercrime attempts annually, resulting in 2.4 million victims. About 40 percent of respondents report ‘click regret,’ often due to financial loss or identity theft.

Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel noted that criminals are increasingly using advanced technologies, such as artificial intelligence and data from leaks, to create highly convincing messages. These scammers often impersonate trusted entities like banks, government agencies, or delivery services, using urgency to bypass a victim's natural suspicion. The campaign advises citizens to pause for three seconds before clicking, responding, or making a payment, and to navigate away if they feel any doubt.
