Netherlands launches collection program for banned fireworks

The Netherlands has implemented a national ban on consumer fireworks in the F2 category and higher, effective August 1. To facilitate compliance, the government is organizing a collection initiative where citizens can hand in prohibited items, such as fountains, cakes, and Roman candles, for free and anonymously without facing fines.

Collection points and a mobile bus will visit 34 locations across the country during September and October. Authorities emphasize that the process is anonymous and does not require identification, aiming to reduce fire and safety risks associated with storing illegal explosives at home.

Despite the initiative, public willingness to participate appears low. Reports indicate that among those who still possess prohibited fireworks, only a small fraction—approximately 4 percent—are considering turning them in. Some residents have reportedly stockpiled fireworks in anticipation of the ban or intend to use them for non-New Year's Eve occasions.
