Netherlands launches coronavirus vaccination round amid flu vaccine delays

A new round of coronavirus vaccinations is scheduled to begin in the Gooi en Vechtstreek region of the Netherlands on September 21. The campaign targets high-risk groups, including individuals aged 70 and older, adults aged 50 to 69 with underlying conditions, medical high-risk groups, healthcare workers, and individuals with vulnerable family members.

Simultaneously, there are reports of delays regarding influenza vaccinations. Due to production and delivery issues following World Health Organization recommendations to adjust three virus strains for the upcoming season, some patients may not receive their flu shots until December. Medical professionals note that while the delay requires reorganization of vaccination rounds, it does not compromise the safety or effectiveness of the vaccine, as the peak of the flu season typically occurs in January.

A pilot program is also being rolled out in eight local GP practices to allow patients to receive both the flu and coronavirus vaccinations at the same time.
