Netherlands launches new migrant and asylum seeker support initiatives

In the Netherlands, new initiatives are addressing the needs of displaced and homeless populations. In Tilburg, the municipality and SMO Traverse are launching ‘De Vaart’ on October 5. Located on the former NOAD site, this facility will provide short-term shelter and guidance for non-entitled EU citizens, primarily homeless labor migrants. The program aims to provide a safe environment for 6 to 12 people for an average of 3 to 6 weeks, focusing on recovery, returning to work, or returning to their country of origin. Starting November 20, the site will also serve as a winter shelter for local homeless residents in the Hart van Brabant region.

Meanwhile, a new asylum seeker center (AZC) in Nuenen recently held a public open day to foster community connection. Managed by the Central Agency for Asylum Reception (COA), the center currently houses 150 residents from 21 different nationalities, including 40 children. Despite previous local resistance and legal challenges, the open day drew a record 930 visitors. The facility has already seen significant community interest, with 85 individuals volunteering to assist with activities such as Dutch language lessons and cycling instruction.
