Netherlands' low river levels strain water supply and inland shipping
The Rhine and IJssel rivers in the Netherlands recorded exceptionally low water levels in the summer of 2026, prompting concerns about water resources. Hydrologist Rogier van der Velde of water utility Vitens explained that drinking‑water supply remains secure because it is drawn from deep groundwater, which is replenished by winter rains and reacts slowly to surface drought. Only a succession of dry years would significantly deplete those reserves.
Rijkswaterstaat reported that discharge at Lobith fell below 820 m³/s, the lowest level since 1976, and continued to stay well below seasonal averages. The reduced flow hampers inland navigation: ships wait longer at locks, can carry less cargo, and risk grounding in shallow sections. The inland‑shipping association CoVademde warned that the theoretical navigation channel may no longer be passable. Companies have begun stockpiling inventories in anticipation of further drops, and delays in river transport could ripple through supply chains, affecting distributors and online retailers.
Officials note that the current drought is part of a longer‑term pattern of alternating wet and dry years, accompanied by rising salinity and water temperatures that also affect nature and agriculture. They urge water retention during wet periods and more careful water use to build resilience against future low‑flow events.
