Netherlands lowers winter gas storage filling target to 64%

The Dutch government has decided to lower the winter gas storage filling target from 80 percent to 64 percent. This adjustment, which sets a new target of 93 terawatt hours, aims to prevent price spikes and aligns with recommendations from the European Commission to avoid the bidding wars seen in 2022.

Climate and Green Growth Minister Stientje van Veldhoven assured that gas supply security remains stable. She noted that the country is not solely dependent on underground storage, citing domestic production and liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports as critical buffers. Additionally, gas consumption in the Netherlands has dropped by approximately 25 percent due to increased sustainability efforts.

While the lower target is considered more realistic given current levels, some experts, including TNO's René Peters, have expressed concerns regarding the potential impact of low winter reserves. As of early September, storage levels had reached nearly 52 percent, up from less than 5 percent in April following ownership changes at the Grijpskerk and Norg facilities.
