Netherlands media and music pivot for the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Dutch duo Bewegenboog, consisting of Mariska Bogaerds and Emil Lange, released the children’s song “De WK Stopdans” on 11 June, timed with the kickoff of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the United States. The upbeat track encourages kids and families to move, clap and freeze on cue, and is already being used in homes, schools and sports clubs across the Netherlands.

Meanwhile, public broadcaster NPO announced that its daily current‑affairs talk show will be taken off the air for a month, from the tournament’s start on 11 June until 13 July, to make room for extensive World Cup coverage. NPO cited expected audience spikes—up to 95 percent for matches involving the Dutch team—and budgetary considerations. The broadcaster said it has contingency plans for breaking news, including using Nieuwsuur and a standby arrangement with WNL.

Both moves reflect how the World Cup is reshaping Dutch entertainment and public‑service programming during the summer.
