Netherlands moves to disrupt illegal gambling and address cyber threats

The Dutch House of Representatives has passed a motion seeking to empower police to disrupt the digital infrastructure of illegal gambling websites. Proponents of the motion, including members Mohandis and Mutluer, argue that these sites are backed by professional, transnational criminal networks. The motion requests the government to launch a pilot program in collaboration with the Netherlands Gambling Authority, the Public Prosecution Service, and the police to target facilitating elements such as payment flows, hosting companies, and online platforms.

Separately, Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel has issued a warning regarding the potential for a massive digital disaster that could disrupt society, comparing the threat level to the impact of the September 11 attacks. Speaking at the Cybersec Netherlands conference, Van Weel highlighted the risks to critical infrastructure, including water, electricity, and emergency services. He noted that artificial intelligence is acting as a 'gamechanger' in hybrid warfare, accelerating the sophistication of cyberattacks and sabotage attempts against companies and government services.
