Netherlands nitrogen policy faces political pressure and implementation challenges

Nitrogen policy remains a central point of contention in Dutch politics. Helma Lodders, chair of the BBB party, has called for the current nitrogen policy to be scrapped, stating that the foundation of the government's approach is flawed. Lodders is also focusing on professionalizing the BBB, transitioning the party from a ‘start-up’ phase to a more mature organization with improved candidate selection and internal procedures.

Meanwhile, the Netherlands is approaching its nitrogen and nature targets, though current plans are not yet sufficient to meet them according to the Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving (PBL). Agriculture Minister Jaimi van Essen expressed optimism, noting that the goals remain within reach through additional measures. The government aims to reduce agricultural nitrogen emissions by 42 to 46 percent by 2035 compared to 2019 levels. Proposed measures include establishing nitrogen-poor zones near nature areas and implementing stricter norms for individual farms, though the minister stated that reducing livestock numbers is not an explicit goal.
