FNV strike Dutch public transport social security reforms September 9 nationwide

The trade union FNV has announced a nationwide 24‑hour strike on 9 September 2024 that will shut down trains, buses, trams and metros across the Netherlands. Workers from Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS), infrastructure manager ProRail, regional and urban transport operators and freight carrier DB Cargo will walk out.

The action is aimed at protesting the cabinet’s planned cuts to the social‑security system – namely an accelerated increase of the state pension age (AOW), a reduction in the duration of unemployment benefits (WW) and a tightening of disability benefits (WIA). Union officials said the reforms threaten the economic security of millions of workers and their families. Edwin Kuiper of FNV warned that while the strike will cause inconvenience, the long‑term impact of dismantling social safety nets would be far greater. Henri Janssen added that the changes jeopardise “the livelihood of millions”. Hans Spekman, FNV’s president, had earlier announced a series of actions in early September and pointed to a four‑hour rail strike in June. The union also indicated that other sectors – ports, waste‑management, cleaning, metal industry and construction – will stage strikes later in September, though exact dates are still pending.
