Netherlands observes World Suicide Prevention Week
World Suicide Prevention Week, observed from September 7 to 13, is driving widespread awareness initiatives across the Netherlands. More than 500 organizations, including municipalities, hospitals, and mental health institutions, are participating in the campaign. A central symbol of the week is the suicide prevention ribbon, with over 85,000 ribbons requested to represent hope and connection.
Specific activities include the ‘Walk into the Light’ event, such as a sunrise walk in Velsen designed to foster connection and recognition for those affected by suicide. Additionally, the organization 113 Zelfmoordpreventie is launching targeted campaigns. One initiative encourages people to ask direct questions to those struggling, while another, ‘Self-solving begins with 113’, specifically targets men aged 40 to 70.
In the Netherlands, more than 1,750 people die by suicide annually, averaging nearly five deaths per day. The ongoing efforts aim to reduce these figures through increased visibility and community support.
