Netherlands online spending per order drops to 100 euros

In the first half of 2026, Dutch consumers spent less per online transaction, with the average order value dropping to 100 euros. This represents a 3 percent decrease compared to the previous year and marks the first decline in average spending since the pandemic period.

Despite the lower per-order amount, the total number of online purchases rose by 3 percent to over 170 million. Total online expenditure remained relatively stable at 17.1 billion euros. While most transactions occur at Dutch webshops, the share of international purchases is growing, with one in seven orders being made abroad. China is identified as the fastest-growing market, driven by platforms such as AliExpress and Temu.

Mobile devices have become a primary tool for shopping, accounting for nearly half of all online purchases. However, spending habits vary by device: the average purchase via smartphone is 80 euros, while transactions made via laptops or desktops average 126 euros. Overall, online shopping accounts for 11 percent of all purchases in the Netherlands, a figure that has remained stable for several years.
