Netherlands organizations launch suicide prevention initiatives
Various organizations and municipalities in the Netherlands are organizing activities to promote suicide prevention during the upcoming Suicide Prevention Week. In the IJsselland region, partners including GGD IJsselland, GGD Noord- en Oost-Gelderland, and the municipalities of Deventer, Olst-Wijhe, Raalte, and Voorst are collaborating to foster openness and connection regarding mental health.
Key initiatives include the ‘Walk into the Light’ events, which consist of symbolic early-morning walks toward the sunrise to provide support for those struggling with suicidal thoughts, their loved ones, and professionals. Scheduled walks are set for various locations including Dalfsen, Raalte, Steenwijk, Staphorst, Zwolle, Deventer, Kampen, Vollenhoven, and Hardenberg.
Other scheduled activities include theme evenings, theater performances such as ‘MIST’ by Janine van der Duin, and peer support groups for both individuals with suicidal thoughts and their bereaved relatives. Additionally, 113 Zelfmoordpreventie offers gatekeeper training to help volunteers, coaches, and community members recognize warning signs and engage in safe, supportive conversations.
