Netherlands outlines economic and digital resilience priorities in Prinsjesdag budget

Following Prinsjesdag, the Dutch government has outlined key priorities for economic and digital resilience. The Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy's budget emphasizes strengthening economic security, digital sovereignty, and protecting citizens against digital risks.

To address challenges such as aging populations, geopolitical tensions, and climate change, the government aims to increase productivity and reduce dependencies on critical raw materials through the National Raw Materials Strategy. This includes supporting strategic projects like the refining and recycling of essential resources.

Regarding digital infrastructure, the government noted that while the Netherlands remains a high-quality hub, its position is pressured by technological shifts, the rise of AI, and hybrid threats. By 2027, the state intends to adopt a more integrated approach with a stronger regulatory role for the central government.

Politically, the budget process highlights internal tensions within the current coalition. Discussions suggest that the VVD's dominant role in the cabinet, despite a reduced number of seats, has contributed to an impasse. There are considerations regarding the homogeneity of the cabinet and its ability to form majorities in both chambers.
