Netherlands podcast audience exceeds 7 million listeners

Research by Markteffect shows that more than half of adult Dutch (55 %) have listened to a podcast at least occasionally, bringing the total reach to over seven million people. In the last two and a half years the share of listeners rose from 48 % to 55 %, and active users now average 8.3 episodes per month – up from 4.6 a year earlier – with weekly listeners spending about 127 minutes listening each week.

A Dutch commentator notes that the surge in popularity has been accompanied by new channels such as blckbx.tv (launched 2 Nov 2020 by former cyclist Flavio Pasquino) and The Trueman Show (launched 17 Dec 2020 by Jorn Luka), which have amassed roughly 195 000 and 112 000 YouTube subscribers respectively. The commentator also references the older alternative‑media site Pateo.nl, expressing concern that many podcast listeners are only incidental users rather than regular, engaged audience members.

The key issue for broadcasters and advertisers is the gap between total reach and listening intensity: while seven million people may click a podcast once, only a smaller core listen habit‑ually, making the medium’s true market value dependent on frequency rather than sheer numbers.
