Netherlands police report surge in fake officer and bank helpdesk scams

Police in the Netherlands said a 16‑year‑old who pretended to be a police officer was arrested in Vught after attempting to rob a 75‑year‑old woman and fleeing when officers arrived. The suspect was taken to a station in ’s‑Hertogenbosch and spent the night in custody.

The incident is part of a broader increase in reports of impostors posing as police, bank help‑desk staff or insurance agents across the country. Police in North‑Netherlands receive dozens of weekly tips about such fraud, which often targets elderly people. Recent cases in Stadskanaal, Vlagtwedde and other towns involved criminals claiming to be bank employees, installing malware on victims’ phones and then stealing cash and jewellery worth several thousand euros. Authorities warn that genuine police or banks never ask for PIN codes, passwords or request to collect personal items.

Police continue investigations into the networks behind these scams and have placed warnings on public displays and in local media to help residents recognise fraudulent tactics.
