Netherlands pressures Sierra Leone over fugitive Jos Leijdekkers
The search for Jos Leijdekkers, a prominent Dutch drug fugitive known as ‘Bolle Jos’, has escalated into a diplomatic and security crisis. Dutch authorities have expressed continued belief that Leijdekkers may be hiding in Sierra Leone, despite repeated assurances from Sierra Leonean security agencies that searches are underway.
In response, the Dutch government is exploring measures at the European Union level, including the potential reduction of development aid to Sierra Leone. Maxime Hovenkamp, a spokesperson for the Dutch Justice Ministry, stated that the Netherlands is working with other EU member states to reach a consensus on such initiatives.
This international tension follows a violent incident in the Dutch village of Overasselt. On September 1, 2026, a group of masked men armed with assault rifles attacked a property linked to a drug lab. The attack resulted in the death of a 51-year-old security guard and left two police officers wounded. Dutch police conducted a massive manhunt, leading to the arrest of 34 suspects.
