Netherlands promotes mindful and power walking for health benefits
Experts in the Netherlands highlight that mindful walking—focusing on breath, steps and surroundings—can lower stress, improve mood and support physical health such as circulation, muscle tone and sleep quality. The practice requires no special equipment, only attention to the present moment.
Additional walking techniques are recommended to boost fitness: power walking at 6.5‑9 km/h with vigorous arm swings, Nordic walking using poles to engage the upper body, walking with light weights or a vest for added resistance, and even backward walking for balance and joint relief. These variations aim to increase calorie burn, strengthen the cardiovascular system and reduce the risk of heart disease.
Wellness coach Andrew Isaac of Vitality Health and fitness instructor Eloise Skinner stress that gradual progression and proper posture are essential to avoid injury while maximizing the health gains of regular walking.
