Netherlands protects low-lying territory with advanced flood defenses

Despite nearly one-third of its territory lying below sea level, the Netherlands remains safe and prosperous through advanced water management strategies. Without protection, approximately 60% of the country would be vulnerable to storm surges and high tides.

The nation's modern approach was catalyzed by a devastating North Sea storm in 1953, which killed over 1,800 people and destroyed vast amounts of agricultural land. This tragedy shifted the national strategy from traditional dike repairs to large-scale, visionary engineering projects.

A centerpiece of this effort is the Delta Works, a massive flood defense system that took over four decades to build and has been recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers as one of the seven wonders of the modern world. A key component is the Maeslantkering storm surge barrier protecting the Port of Rotterdam, which utilizes two massive steel gates operated automatically by computers to manage sea levels.
