Netherlands public transport strike scheduled for September 9
A nationwide 24-hour public transport strike in the Netherlands is scheduled for Wednesday, September 9. The industrial action, announced by the FNV union, targets proposed government budget cuts to social security programs, specifically affecting unemployment (WW) and disability (WIA) benefits.
National railway operator NS announced that no trains will run for the entire day, though Schiphol Airport will maintain limited accessibility. NS executive Wouter Koolmees described the impact as 'quite worthless' and called for renewed negotiations between the government, employers, and unions. Regular service is expected to resume on September 10.
The strike also affects regional and urban transport. In The Hague, HTM reported that all tram and bus services will be suspended. While regional operator EBS aims to maintain its schedule, it warned of potential delays and cancellations due to individual staff participation. Employees from ProRail and various municipal transport services are also involved in the walkout.
