Netherlands public transport workers announce second national strike

Bus drivers and regional train personnel in the Netherlands are scheduled to hold a nationwide strike on Thursday, October 22. This marks the second major industrial action following a breakdown in collective labor agreement (CAO) negotiations in July.

The unions, FNV and CNV, representing approximately 13,000 employees, have announced plans to strike one day per week until Christmas. They are protesting against proposed changes to working conditions, which they describe as a “package of deteriorations.” Key points of contention include shorter notice periods for roster changes, the introduction of up to 45 minutes of unpaid breaks per shift, and reduced influence for works councils regarding scheduling.

In response, the unions are demanding a 9.5 percent wage increase over two years, better work-life balance, improved elderly employee schemes, and faster access to permanent contracts. Employers, represented by VWOV, have stated that financial pressures on public transport limit their ability to meet these demands.

The strike is expected to affect several major operators, including EBS, Qbuzz, Keolis, Arriva, and RET. While regional bus and train services will face significant disruptions, major city transport in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and The Hague, as well as NS national rail services, are generally expected to remain operational.
