Netherlands regulator limits Tesla Assisted Driving speed margin

The Netherlands vehicle regulator, RDW, has approved updates to Tesla’s driver-assistance system in Europe, officially renaming it “Tesla Assisted Driving” (TAD). A significant change in the update involves the system’s speed margin, which allows the vehicle to drive above the posted limit for safety and traffic flow. Previously, drivers could set this margin up to 50 percent above the limit, but it is now capped at a maximum of 10 percent.

Under the new regulations, the speed margin will reset to 0 percent at every vehicle start, and other speed-related functions will be disabled by default. The RDW noted that Tesla requested the assessment for these “minor changes” and found no adverse or unintended effects on vehicle operation. The existing type approval remains valid.

The RDW has notified nine other countries that recognize its approval: Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovakia, and Slovenia. While these changes align with conditions previously set by Germany, broader approval across the entire European Union remains under discussion by the European Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles.
