A44 Reopens After Lisserweg Viaduct Replacement in the Netherlands

Rijkswaterstaat opened the A44 on 4 July 2026, restoring two‑way traffic toward The Hague after completing the replacement of the nearly 90‑year‑old Lisserweg viaduct. The new viaduct is broader and lower, eliminating the former “cat‑back” shape and providing better road visibility and safety.

The construction used a staged method: a new foundation was installed while the old viaduct remained in use, then the old structure was removed and the new one erected quickly. Local traffic under the viaduct remains detoured; the underpass is being lowered and is expected to reopen in early September 2026. This project marks the first phase of a large‑scale renewal of the A44, with future upgrades planned for the Hoofdvaart viaduct, the Kaagbrug and the railway viaduct near Sassenheim.
