Netherlands road closures disrupt traffic in Groningen and Friesland

On Saturday 20 June, the N46 (Eemshavenweg) between the Kwelderweg in Eemshaven and the Boterdiep junction in Groningen was closed in both directions for scheduled maintenance. Works included small asphalt repairs, pruning, mowing, and cleaning of bridges and traffic signs. Traffic was detoured via provincial routes N363/N361 through Uithuizen and Winsum, or via N33/N360 through Appingedam and Ten Boer. The closure ran from 06:00 to 19:00, with the northern section reopening at 11:00.

Earlier, on Monday evening 15 June, the Dorkwerd bridge was fully opened to shipping after the bridge deck failed to close following an opening. Rijkswaterstaat declared the bridge unsafe for all road users and redirected motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to the Aduard bridge. Repair works on Dorkwerd are pending, while the Aduard bridge will have its steel cables replaced from 29 June to 5 July, remaining closed to traffic until it reopens on 6 July. The Dorkwerd bridge is part of the Lemmer‑Delfzijl main waterway, a key inland navigation route linking northern Germany with the ports of Amsterdam and Rotterdam.
