Netherlands sees 2.2% rise in DUI traffic fines in first half of 2026
In the first six months of 2026 Dutch police recorded 24,132 offences for driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication, a 2.2% increase and 520 more cases than the same period in 2025. The busiest month was May, with 4,290 incidents nationwide. Rotterdam led with 1,465 offences, up 10.7%, followed by The Hague (1,439, +24.2%) and Amsterdam (1,409, +6.7%). Utrecht saw a sharp decline to 404 offences, a drop of 25.1% from the previous year. On the municipal level, Helmond reported 116 offences, 17 fewer than 2025, while nearby Someren rose to 34, ten more than the year before. In the eastern region, Rheden posted 46 offences, down 15, whereas Arnhem increased to 308 (+70) and Brummen to 26 (+13). Insurance expert Jean‑Paul Würsten warned that financial consequences of DUI can far exceed the fine, with many insurers refusing coverage and drivers potentially liable for tens of thousands of euros in damages.
