Netherlands sees lower mosquito nuisance due to drought and heat

Research from Wageningen University & Research indicates that mosquito nuisance in the Netherlands was 16 percent lower this summer compared to the 2020–2025 average. This decrease is attributed to extreme heat and prolonged drought, which reduced the availability of stagnant water necessary for larval development.

While the lack of breeding sites lowered overall numbers, record-high temperatures have caused mosquitoes to develop more rapidly. Researchers noted that a sixth generation of mosquitoes was already flying around this early in the year, which is an unusual phenomenon.

Experts warn that rising temperatures may facilitate the faster development of viruses within mosquitoes. In the Netherlands, the West Nile virus has been recorded, resulting in three deaths and nine total infections. The RIVM advises precautions such as using window screens and mosquito nets to prevent infection, particularly for vulnerable populations.
