Netherlands solar net metering end threatens sports clubs

The Netherlands is set to end the net metering scheme (salderingsregeling) on January 1, 2027, a move that poses significant financial risks to sports clubs that have invested in solar energy. Currently, small consumers and associations can offset their annual electricity consumption with the energy they generate. Once this scheme ends, the value of solar energy will shift toward immediate self-consumption rather than feeding excess power back into the grid.

Research from the Mulier Institute indicates that at least 33 percent of Dutch sports associations have installed solar panels. Members of the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) have expressed concern that the timing of this policy change creates a mismatch between energy production and usage; clubs typically generate power during the day in summer, while peak usage occurs during evenings and weekends.

Estimates suggest an average football club with 60 solar panels could face additional costs of approximately 6,500 euros per season. Lawmakers have questioned the government regarding the total impact on the amateur sports sector, noting that many clubs invested in sustainability with government support. There are concerns that these increased energy costs may eventually be passed on to members through higher membership fees.
