Netherlands solar owners face 2027 net metering changes

The phasing out of the net metering scheme (salderingsregeling) in the Netherlands by 2027 is prompting a shift in how solar panel owners manage their energy. Under the current system, users can fully offset the electricity they feed back into the grid against the electricity they consume. However, from 2027, the compensation for fed-back electricity is expected to be significantly lower than the purchase price of electricity.

To mitigate the financial impact, experts suggest two primary strategies. First, maximizing self-consumption by shifting energy-intensive activities, such as running dishwashers or charging electric vehicles, to daylight hours when solar production peaks. Second, investing in home battery systems to store excess daytime energy for use during the evening.

This transition reflects a broader shift from consumers to ‘prosumers’—individuals who both produce and consume energy. This evolution in the energy market is placing increased pressure on the electricity grid, a challenge linked to the large-scale transition toward renewable sources like wind and solar.
