Netherlands student loan interest rates to rise in 2027
The Dutch Education Executive Agency (DUO) has announced that interest rates on student loans will rise again in 2027. The increase is linked to the rising interest rates the government pays on its own debts.
The impact varies depending on the repayment scheme. Under the older 15-year repayment system, interest rates will jump from 2.29% to 3.28%. For those under the newer 35-year repayment scheme, the rate will increase from 2.33% to 2.70%.
Student organizations, including the Interstedelijk Studenten Overleg (ISO) and the Landelijke Studentenvakbond (LSVb), have criticized the move. They noted that the new rates exceed the 2.5% interest cap previously discussed in coalition agreements. Critics argue that these increases could cost students thousands of euros over time, describing the hike as a ‘kick in the teeth’ for those already facing economic difficulties.
