Netherlands targets reduction in energy import dependency by 2040
The Dutch government has announced plans to significantly reduce energy import dependency, aiming to lower it from the current 80% to approximately 50% by 2040. This policy, outlined in a parliamentary letter by Minister Van Veldhoven, aligns with new EU climate goals and the updated National Energy System Plan (NPE 2026).
The strategy focuses on building a resilient energy system by increasing domestic energy production to support both the sustainability of existing industries and the development of new ones. Key requirements for achieving these targets include sufficient financial resources, regulatory policy, and effective implementation.
However, stakeholders have raised concerns regarding the speed and capacity of the transition. Specific challenges include the limitations of transporting offshore wind energy to land and the current pace of hydrogen storage development.
