Netherlands Tax Authority offers debt relief options for entrepreneurs
The Dutch Tax Authority (Belastingdienst) has reported that nearly 170,000 entrepreneurs are currently facing financial difficulties or expect to within the next six months. Officials noted that many business owners delay seeking assistance due to shame, despite the availability of free and often anonymous support services.
To manage tax debts, the authority provides several relief pathways. Entrepreneurs with a total tax debt under €20,000 who have no prior history of payment extensions may request short-term deferment of up to four months via telephone. For those requiring more time, a payment arrangement of up to 12 months can be requested using a formal application.
In exceptional circumstances where a healthy business faces temporary problems outside of normal business risks, extensions longer than 12 months may be granted upon submission of a substantiated statement. Since January 1, 2026, the collection interest rate for late payments is set at 4.3% per annum. Organizations such as Geldfit Zakelijk, the Chamber of Commerce (KVK), and local municipalities also offer assistance to help business owners organize their administration and manage financial crises.
