Netherlands to ban F2 and F3 category pyrotechnics in 2026

The Netherlands has announced a total ban on the purchase, possession, and use of F2 and F3 category pyrotechnics, effective August 1, 2026. This measure aims to reduce injuries, property damage, noise pollution, and environmental impact, while easing the burden on emergency services during New Year celebrations.

Under the new system, only F1 category pyrotechnics, which carry negligible noise and risk, will remain available to the public. Professional fireworks displays may still be conducted under specific regulations, and local exemptions may be granted for certain organized celebrations.

In Croatia, where certain firecrackers and rockets have been banned since 2021, animal welfare advocates are calling for similar comprehensive measures. Snježana Klopotan Kačavenda of the Animal Friends Association noted that while Croatia has banned specific products, other loud pyrotechnics within the same categories remain legal, creating a loophole for loud detonations.
