Netherlands to end solar net metering scheme in 2027
The Netherlands will officially terminate its net metering scheme (salderingsregeling) on January 1, 2027. Under the current system, households and small businesses can offset the electricity they feed back into the grid against their own consumption, effectively using the grid as a virtual battery.
Following approval by the Senate, the new law mandates that from 2027, consumers will pay for all electricity consumed and receive a separate, reduced compensation for the energy they feed back into the grid. Until 2030, this compensation is set to be at least 50 percent of the base delivery rate (excluding taxes).
The government's objective is to encourage households to use their solar energy locally to reduce grid congestion and mitigate losses in tax revenue. In response to these upcoming changes, local initiatives such as the Medemblik Climate Week, organized by the Municipality of Medemblik and Stichting Eneregio, are providing information sessions to help homeowners explore alternatives like home batteries and smarter energy management.
