Netherlands to lower livestock transport temperature limit to 30°C

The Netherlands will implement stricter regulations for livestock transport starting April 1, 2027. Under the new rules, the transport of livestock will be prohibited when outdoor temperatures reach 30 degrees Celsius. This marks a significant reduction from the previous threshold of 35 degrees Celsius and exceeds current European Union minimum standards.

Agricultural State Secretary Silvio Erkens stated the measure aims to reduce heat stress during transit. While the ban applies to standard transport, exceptions will be made for climate-controlled vehicles, provided it can be proven that the temperature around the animals remains below 30 degrees Celsius.

Industry representatives and transport associations, including Vee&Logistiek Nederland, have expressed concerns regarding logistical challenges. They warn that the policy may cause bottlenecks, requiring transports to be shifted to early morning or nighttime hours. There are also fears that delays in transport could lead to animal welfare issues within farms if livestock cannot be moved from stables in a timely manner.
