Netherlands to mandate energy labels for protected monuments

Starting May 29, 2026, energy labels will become mandatory for the sale or rental of protected monuments in the Netherlands. This change follows the European Union's Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD IV), which aims to increase energy efficiency across European buildings by removing previous exemptions for historic sites.

Certain exceptions to the mandate apply, including buildings used solely for religious services, industrial functions, or those with a surface area of less than 50 square meters. Buildings used for less than four months a year with minimal energy consumption may also be exempt.

To support sustainability efforts, local initiatives such as the 'Isolatieaanpak Nij Begun' in Stadskanaal offer assistance to monument owners. From July 1, 2026, owners can schedule appointments with a monument manager to receive free home visits and customized insulation, ventilation, and structural maintenance plans designed to preserve historical character.
