Netherlands to restrict police involvement in religious gatherings

The Dutch police, security regions, and Justice Minister David van Weel are developing stricter guidelines to ensure the neutrality of police officers. Under the new rules, officers will be restricted from organizing or facilitating religious gatherings, such as iftars or Christmas and Easter celebrations.

While officers will no longer be permitted to attend such events in uniform, ‘functional visits’ intended to maintain contact with specific neighborhoods or communities may still be authorized. The move follows ongoing debate regarding the ‘lifestyle neutrality’ of officers in uniform and their role as representatives of authority.

The push for stricter regulations follows a motion by JA21 MP Ingrid Coenradie, which requested that police units do not use capacity, resources, or facilities to organize iftars. This follows previous controversies involving police-organized religious meals and social media posts by various regional police departments regarding religious holidays.
