The Dutch Ministry of Justice and Security, led by Minister David van Weel, has moved to implement stricter guidelines regarding the neutrality of police officers. The initiative aims to address debates over ‘lifestyle neutrality’ and ensure that officers do not appear to express specific religious convictions while representing authority.

Under the developing regulations, police are prohibited from organizing or facilitating external religious gatherings, such as iftars or holiday celebrations. While internal religious events for staff remain permitted, officers will no longer be allowed to attend external religious events in uniform, though ‘functional visits’ intended to maintain community contact may still be authorized.

The policy change has faced criticism from local officials, such as Hera Butt of the Pro party, who argued that restricting these social interactions could hinder the police’s ability to build vital connections and bridge gaps within the community.
