Netherlands to trial autonomous buses to improve regional transport

Dutch State Secretary for Infrastructure and Water Management, Annet Bertram, has presented a plan to improve regional accessibility and modernize the national public transport system. The initiative aims to address the decline in regional services, which has seen over 1,100 bus stops removed nationwide in the last six years, making it increasingly difficult for elderly citizens and students to reach essential services like hospitals and schools.

To combat staff shortages and service gaps, the government is funding three trials for autonomous, self-driving buses. Bertram noted that while autonomous transport may seem daunting initially, it represents a necessary future for maintaining connectivity.

Additionally, the plan seeks to increase efficiency by centralizing public transport management in collaboration with municipalities and provinces. This includes integrating various specialized services, such as student and medical transport, into unified systems similar to the 'De Flex' model in Zeeland, which allows travelers to book rides via app or phone for the price of regular public transport.
