Netherlands tourism shifts as guest numbers rise but overnight stays fall

Data from the Netherlands Bureau of Tourism & Conventions (NBTC) indicates a shift in travel patterns within the Netherlands. During the first half of 2026, the number of overnight guests grew by 0.7%, yet the total number of overnight stays decreased by 1.5%.

This trend is particularly evident among visitors from Germany and Belgium, where overnight stays fell by 3%. Experts suggest that travelers are opting for shorter stays and making more last-minute booking decisions, keeping their options open longer.

While high price levels and VAT increases in the Netherlands may impact international competitiveness, other factors such as weather, geopolitical uncertainty, and economic conditions also influence these changing behaviors. The hospitality sector is advised to increase flexibility in booking and availability to accommodate guests who are more price-sensitive and decisive at a later stage.
