Netherlands trials 100 euro banknotes in ATMs
De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) and Geldmaat have launched a trial to reintroduce 100 euro banknotes into ATMs across 46 locations in the Netherlands. The initiative aims to determine if there is a demand for higher denominations, as inflation has reduced the purchasing power of smaller notes; since the euro's introduction in 2002, prices have risen by approximately 70%.
Preliminary data indicates positive reception, with 57% of customers choosing the 100 euro note when given the option, particularly for larger withdrawals. While the note is standard in most other eurozone countries, some Dutch retailers have expressed concerns regarding the efficiency of handling larger bills and the potential difficulty of providing change.
DNB has advised consumers to use the 100 euro note for larger purchases rather than small transactions to minimize issues for merchants. A final decision on whether to make the 100 euro banknote a permanent fixture in Dutch ATMs will be made early next year.
