Netherlands: Updates on streaming, tuition, and housing subsidies

Several regulatory and economic updates are affecting residents and consumers in the Netherlands.

Videoland has announced changes to its subscription model effective September 18, 2026. Users with Plus and Premium plans will encounter limited advertising, such as content appearing before or after programs or during pauses, though on-demand content will not be interrupted mid-stream.

In the education sector, statutory tuition fees for full-time studies at Dutch universities and colleges will rise to €2,694 for the 2026-2027 academic year, an increase of €93 from the previous year.

Regarding housing and energy, the Vereniging Eigen Huis advises heat pump owners to prioritize cooling capabilities due to rising summer temperatures. Additionally, residents in the Groningen and Drenthe earthquake areas have until August 31, 2026, to apply for subsidies of up to €4,000 for home sustainability or improvements, provided they have recognized damage from gas extraction.

Finally, the implementation of the EU Pay Transparency Directive will require companies with over 100 employees to report on gender pay gaps and adopt specific job evaluation systems.
