Netherlands wage transparency: Employees report pay uncertainty
A recent study by HR platform Learned and research bureau Norstat reveals significant uncertainty regarding compensation and career progression among Dutch workers. According to the survey of 1,000 employees, 33 percent believe that the most outspoken colleagues receive the highest salaries, while 31 percent feel their own pay does not reflect their performance compared to peers.
The research highlights a lack of clarity in professional development, with 75 percent of employees reporting a lack of clear career paths and 80 percent stating they do not have ongoing discussions regarding performance and growth. Additionally, 44 percent of respondents described performance reviews as feeling unfair.
Experts note that these perceptions pose a challenge as the Netherlands prepares for the Wage Transparency Act. Compliance requires more than just publishing salary scales; employers must be able to provide objective justifications for pay differences. This necessitates a foundation of objective job evaluation and classification based on factors such as responsibility, complexity, and impact, rather than focusing solely on individual salaries.
